Share

Tickets are on sale for the Aug. 22 Poway Kiwanis Club “Keg & Cork” event to raise money to help needy local children Christmas shop for their families.

The event will be held in an empty Poway Auto Group showroom at 13864 Poway Road. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Participants (over 21, please) will sample local beer, wine and food and will be able to bid on a large selection of silent and live auction items. All money raised will be used by the club’s non-profit foundation to finance Walmart gift cards that will be given to youngsters participating in the annual “Holiday with Heroes” event in mid-December. Last year near 200 youngsters shopped with first responders and U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton as their escorts.

Among the live auction prizes to be offered are:

• Dinner for 10 people prepared by Poway firefighters at the fire station.

• Dinner for eight, at the winner’s home, with nationally known English language expert, author and radio personality Richard Lederer as the host.

• An Asian dinner for eight prepared by Club President Joyce Handa.

• Weekend stays at condominiums in Big Bear and Baja California.

• An opportunity to drive a race car at the Irwindale Speedway.

Silent auction baskets will center around assorted themes, such as Italian, barbecue and movie night. Baskets featuring jewelry and fashion apparel are also planned.

Tickets may be purchased through the club’s website, www.powaykiwanis.org or its Facebook site. Early-bird discounted tickets, at $35 each, are available through July 31. After that, tickets are $50 each.
