Prep Baseball: Down to last strike, Nevin saves day for Titans

The Poway High baseball team was one strike away from being eliminated from the San Diego Section Division I playoffs. But then Tyler Nevin came to the rescue.

The senior third baseman smashed a two-out solo home run -- his second of the game -- in the top of the seventh to tie it and then Kevin Bristow laced an RBI double, as the No. 6 Titans stunned No. 2 La Jolla Country Day with a 6-5 victory to remain alive and pull within a win of playing for a section title.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at La Jolla Country Day with a spot in the Division I championship game on the line. Poway is trying to get to its first section title game since winning the Division I crown in 2009.

For Nevin, who is expected to be a high pick in the 2015 MLB Draft next week, it was his seventh and eighth home runs of the season. He went 4-for-4 with four RBIs.

After his blast in the seventh tied it, Brett Singer drew a walk and Bristow followed with the two-out, RBI double. Dylan Weese then closed the door in the bottom of the seventh.
