StoneRidge Country Club up for sale

StoneRidge Country Club owner Michael Schlesinger has listed the 117-acre property in Poway for sale.

The private country club, located at 17166 StoneRidge Country Club Lane, features an 18-hole championship golf course, nine recently-resurfaced tennis courts, three recently-renovated banquet facilities, a 25-meter outdoor swimming pool and a children’s wading pool.

“The owner wants to see what the market will bear and we will go from there,” said broker Ken Arimitsu of PM Realty Group, adding that Schlesinger will only sell the property for a price he thinks is a fair one.

“At the end of the day, he doesn’t need to sell it,” Arimitsu said.

The country club opened in 1962.

StoneRidge, like many golf courses across the nation, has been hit hard financially with rising water costs and a decline in memberships. When Schlesinger’s company, No Stone Left Unturned LLC, purchased the note in early 2013 his intentions were to build it up.

“StoneRidge has been neglected over the last three or four years, and we plan to put investment into it, increase membership, and restore it,” he told the San Diego Union-Tribune at the time.

Schlesinger then hired Touchstone Golf, a company specializing in golf course management, to take over operations. There were new membership packages created and in 2014 the country club underwent a remodel, which included new carpet and fresh paint in the lobby, the renovation of three banquet facilities and the resurfacing of nine tennis courts.

Current StoneRidge General Manager Jim Swieter said the club has approximately 474 total memberships, including seasonal memberships. He says that is higher than the number they had before Touchstone Golf took over.

“Our memberships ebb and flow, but we have seen consistent growth since November of last year,” he wrote in an e-mail.

Mayor Steve Vaus said the city had been apprized of Schlesinger’s decision to try to sell the property.

“Many golf courses are struggling and unfortunately StoneRidge is no exception,” Vaus said. “The club has been a tremendous asset to the community for decades so we will be monitoring the situation closely.”
