Survey: Poway Unified offers good value for the dollar

The Poway Unified School District placed higher than any other school district in the county in a new “Best School Districts for Your Buck” survey conducted by an online financial site.

NerdWallet researched and ranked 375 school districts in California. Criteria used included affectability (median home values and selected homeowner costs) standardized test scores, dropout rates and class sizes.

The PUSD placed 51st on the list. The survey findings said the district had a median home value of $550,100, an average SAT test score of 1,688, an average 2012-13 school year Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) score of 386, a 95.2 percent graduation rate and a student-teacher ratio of 26.6 to one.

The San Dieguito Union High School District was the next San Diego County district listed, at No. 114.

Top honors went to the Davis Joint Unified School District.
