Phil’s BBQ coming to Rancho Bernardo

Share

A Phil’s BBQ is coming to the former Elephant Bar & Restaurant in Rancho Bernardo before year’s end, company officials announced Monday.

“We have searched high and low for a spot convenient to Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Mira Mesa and 4S Ranch,” said owner Phil Pace. “We are confident we have found a perfect fit.”

Officials said a “substantial” remodel is planned for the 7,720-square-foot site at 17051 W. Bernardo Drive in Rancho Bernardo’s Westwood neighborhood. The renovation — tentatively set to begin in April — will include a full bar filled with a selection of beers from local micro breweries plus craft cocktails. There will also be oversized televisions, an LED sports ticker and “an incredible sound system.”

“Customers know us for our great customer service and barbecue,” Pace said. “It’s really important to us that we maintain our brand but continue to keep our restaurants fresh. Small touches can make a big difference.”

The San Diego-based Phil’s BBQ opened its first location in 1998. It has since expanded to San Marcos and Santee, plus opened two eateries at Petco Park and another at the San Diego International Airport. The Rancho Bernardo restaurant will be its fourth free-standing location.

Officials said will start accepting applications for the Rancho Bernardo restaurant in September and anticipate hiring 75 employees. For updates, go to www.philsbbq.net.

The Elephant Bar — which operated in Rancho Bernardo for many years — closed in June 2014. It was one of 16 the Costa Mesa-based restaurant chain closed during its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
