Poway Countryside Barn has a new look

After being closed for four weeks, Poway Countryside Barn will be reopening its doors with a fresh new look and new merchandise on Saturday.

The store, at 14051 Midland Road in Old Poway Village Shopping Center, has undergone an extensive internal facelift, including removing walls, redoing the back wall and flooring, painting and adding a porch to one side for gardening merchandise.

“It was looking tired,” said Liz McNamara, who runs the store with her mother Debi McNamara. “We wanted to keep up with the times.”

The store will hold its grand reopening on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and will be offering a raffle and cookies and treats at the open house. “Come and see the new look,” said Debi.

Select pieces will be marked down between 15 and 30 percent during the first week.

The facelift will also better cater to the store’s new direction of providing more unique and one-of-a-kind vintage, refurbished items. “We were tired of the store and wanted to re-do it,” said Liz. “It didn’t fit the look of our merchandise anymore.”

The store will continue its competitive pricing with its new merchandise. “We’re a small store, so people might think we’re expensive, but we’re competitively priced,” said Liz. “We don’t have a markup. We offer better quality, competitive pricing and a unique feel for your home.”

The McNamaras said that when they realized they found the store tired and boring looking, they considered moving to a new location but ultimately decided to do a remodel instead. “We like the location,” said Debi. “We’re near the farmer’s market. We didn’t want to move.”

The back wall is now wooden, decorated with recycled pallet wood and painted samples of the wood Liz constructs benches from. “The original (back wall) was brick, which was difficult to hang items on,” said Liz.

The new indoor porch roof is made out of metal roofing sheets Liz got from a horse stable she volunteers at.

The store has also added a DIY corner, where they will sell chalk paint, light bulbs, knobs and everything you need to refurbish your own furniture. “A lot of customers want to take it home and do it themselves,” said Liz. To facilitate that, Poway Countryside Barn will also have unfinished pieces and salvaged metal to allow customers to create their own recycled masterpiece.

“(Poway Countryside Barn) has a lot of the same old charm and merchandise,” said Liz, “but now with a lot of reclaimed, recycled and refurbished merchandise as well. We’re not just country anymore, we have a little bit of everything. It’s eclectic, fresh country.”

“It’s a new take on country,” said Debi. “It’s fresh, not kitschy. But it’s still warm, friendly, all the good things country is.”
