Prep Girls Lacrosse: Titans snap two-game skid with win over Broncos

There are two ways a team can react to a slow start to the season: Sulk and continue the downward slide or channel the frustration into a positive action in hopes of turning things around.

The latter is what the Poway High girls lacrosse team has done.

The Titans opened the season with a 1-4 record -- all four losses are to teams ranked in the top five of the San Diego Section by Laxpower.com -- but have remained in high spirits and without doubt that the winning will eventually come.

Poway played like it is determined to turn its fortunes around Friday night, beating rival Rancho Bernardo 14-7 in the Palomar League opener for both schools. It was the eighth straight time the Titans have topped the Broncos.

“I am not worried at all about our slow start, because we are a young team and we are clicking really well right now,” said sophomore Isabelle Flud, who led seven different Poway scorers with three goals. “I think once we get more experienced the wins are going to start flowing in.”

The ball was flowing in to the net early and often for the Titans (2-5, 1-0) Friday night. Poway never trailed and when the Broncos (4-3, 0-1) pulled to within 5-3 with seven minutes left in the first half the Titans scored seven straight to take a commanding 12-3 lead.

Erin Dunn, Sierra Hansen, Torry Poulson, Natalie Yorba and Lianna Friedman all scored two goals apiece for Poway, who showed off its offensive versatility much to the delight of its fans that made the short trip to Rancho Bernardo High.

“We are a very diverse team,” Flud said. “We do have key players that we look for, but we like to have everybody going to goal and we all have that confidence in each other to score.”

The Broncos were led by senior Katie Carpenter, who scored a game-high four goals.
