Prep Baseball: Poway blanks Northview in Lions opener

Alex Blaszyk is proving he can be the ace the Poway High baseball team needs.

The sophomore right-hander delivered another stellar performance on the mound Monday, going the distance in the Titans’ 3-0 victory over Northview in the opening game of the Premier Division in the Lions Classic.

Blaszyk, who gave up just three hits over seven innings in his last outing against San Pasqual, struck out four and allowed just five hits en route to his first win of the season.

The Titans (5-4) are 1-0 in the pool-play portion of the tournament. Also winning in Bracket ‘B’ was San Ysidro, who beat Valhalla 8-1. Poway face Valhalla Tuesday and then San Ysidro Wednesday. The winner of the bracket advances to Thursday’s semifinals.

The Titans scored all three of their runs with one swing of the bat. Brett Singer laced a two-out double with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning. His shot to the right-center-field gap cleared the bases.

Blake Wagenseller continued his torrid start to the season, going 2-for-3. Poway had just four hits in the game, but it was enough for Blaszyk to get the win.
