Memorial Day will be observed in Rancho Bernardo, Poway

Memorial Day will be observed Monday during ceremonies in Rancho Bernardo and Poway.

The Rancho Bernardo Veterans Memorial Association is organizing the tribute to those who lost their lives during wartime. The patriotic ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Rancho Bernardo Veterans Memorial in Webb Park, near the pond. The park can be accessed from Avena Place, off Bernardo Center Drive.

The keynote speaker will be retired Marine Corps Brig. Gen. David Brahms, a Vietnam veteran who served in the military from 1962 to 1988. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the Army Judge Advocate General’s School. His assignments included being stationed at Camp Pendleton and he concluded his military career as the staff judge advocate to the commandant of the Marine Corps. In civilian life Brahms continued his legal career, focusing his practice on military law.

Admission is free. Attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs since seating is extremely limited.

Memorial Day in Poway services will be held at 11 a.m. at Dearborn Memorial Park, 14361 Tierra Bonita Road.

Fleet Reserve Association Branch 70, VFW Post 7907, American Legion Post 479 and the Poway Chapter of Military Officers will conduct the services.

Capt. Randy Garner of the U.S. Navy will be the featured speaker.

Garner is a 1990 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a Surface Warfare Officer having served in a variety of ships and shore commands. His current assignment is Maritime Operations Director at COMNAVSURFPAC.

Each involved organization will also give a brief presentation.

Attendees are invited to the Fleet Reserve Club, 14231 Garden Road, after the services for barbecue lunch.
