Share

Get an early start on your Memorial weekend activities by heading over to the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society’s 10th annual Pancake Festival.

The event designed to honor the military will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 23 at Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte, Rancho Bernardo.

Tickets are $7, but free to veterans, active duty military and children under age 3. Purchase in advance at the Rancho Bernardo History Museum on the winery grounds or at the event. For details, go to www.rbhistoricalsociety.org or call 858-775-5788. Each breakfast ticket includes an entry for the door prize, a vintage carved cameo pin/pendant and rope chain.

If they have not already done so, those who have served in the military are invited to bring a photo of themselves in uniform so it can be scanned and included on the museum’s Wall of Honor.

In addition to the breakfast consisting of pancakes, sausage, fruit, yogurt, juice and coffee, organizers also plan to have live Dixieland style music, an opportunity drawing, patriotic games for children, face painting and more. For a $20 donation, attendees may also paint a ceramic tile that after it is glazed and fired will be mounted on the museum’s tile mural wall.

As per tradition, the festival will have a military honoree. This year retired Rear Adm. Robert “Bob” H. Wertheim was selected for the honor. His 35 years in the Navy included serving as director of Navy Strategic Systems projects, responsible for research, development, production and operational support of the Navy’s submarine-launched ballistic missile systems.

The 1945 U.S. Naval Academy graduate retired from the military in 1980. He worked for seven years at Lockheed Corporation and now consults with entities about nuclear non-proliferation, is an active member of the American Academy of Sciences and works with the United States Strategic Advisory Committee on national security issues and the U.S. strategic command.
