Prep Softball: Sullivan, Titans breeze past Dons, win away from title game

Share

Freshman Colleen Sullivan sparked an offense that was long overdue for a scoring outburst and the Poway High softball team is a win away from playing for its first section title since 2011.

The UCLA-bound Sullivan smacked a three-run homer in the first and delivered two more RBIs during the second-seeded Titans’ 7-0 crushing of No. 6 Cathedral Catholic in the Open Division winners bracket semifinal Saturday at Poway High School.

Sullivan’s three-run shot was part of a four-run first for the Titans, who had no trouble hitting the ball against Westview but scored just one run. That was not an issue in this one, as they gave plenty of support to ace Kourtney Shaw.

The Cal-bound right-handed senior backed up her no-hitter in a first-round win over Westview with another complete-game shutout against the Dons. She struck out 10 and allowed just three hits. That makes it 14 straight scoreless innings for Shaw.

It was a crucial victory for Poway, who will now have to be beaten twice on Thursday at the Santee Sportsplex to be denied a trip to the title game.

The Titans will face the winner of Tuesday’s elimination game between No. 5 Mater Dei Catholic and No. 3 Rancho Buena Vista on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Santee Sportsplex.

Poway is trying to capture its first section championship since 2002.
