Prep Boys Lacrosse: Young Titans capture Open Division crown

Share

As the final horn sounded Saturday night at Granite Hills High, Poway boys lacrosse coach Zach Burke jumped on his team’s bench facing his cheering section and let out a primal scream.

It was the type of thing a coach can only do when his team is king of the mountain, and that’s just what the Titans are.

Second-seeded Poway held off a frantic comeback attempt by No. 8 Torrey Pines in the final minutes to win the Open Division title 8-7 and secure the program’s first section crown since 2002, the first year the San Diego Section sanctioned lacrosse.

“I literally thought I was dreaming,” Burke said of his final celebration.

“When the first whistle blew, we had four freshmen on the field. It’s not normal to have young guys rise up like this.”

Freshman goalkeeper Kellan Cutting was a player who did, making eight saves in just his third start of the season.

Zach Hodge led Poway (17-6) with three goals while five other Titans netted one each.

Jackson Lienhart led Torrey Pines (14-8) with four goals.
