Prep Football: Broncos headed back to Division II title game

Share

After the Rancho Bernardo High football team fell to El Capitan in the San Diego Section Division II championship game last season, it came up with a mantra for 2015: “finish the mission.”

The Broncos sure look determined to fulfill that mantra.

Running back Milan Grice rushed for a career-high five touchdowns, the defense forced five turnovers and second-seeded Rancho Bernardo dismantled No. 6 Otay Ranch 48-14 Friday in a Division II semifinal game at Rancho Bernardo High.

The Broncos (10-2) will now get another crack at capturing their first section championship since 1995. They will face Poway Unified School District rival and fourth-seeded Mt. Carmel for the Division II championship Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Southwestern College.

The Broncos beat Mt. Carmel 45-20 in Palomar League play earlier this season.

Rancho Bernardo (10-2) jumped all over the Mustangs (7-6) right from the start, building a 38-6 lead by the break. Grice had four touchdowns and 136 yards rushing in the first half alone. The junior finished with 195 yards on the ground and had TD runs of 1, 6, 3, 45 and 54 yards. He has 19 rushing TDs on the season.

Devaughn Vele accounted for the Broncos’ other score, as the senior hauled in a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mark Salazar. Vele has caught a TD pass in four of his last five games.

Rancho Bernardo’s defense recovered three fumbles and the special teams jumped on a fumble by Otay Ranch on the game’s opening kickoff. Jeff Molino and Leo Wagner each picked off a pass for the Broncos.
