Share

The region’s only India Pale Ale festival is returning next week, with proceeds going to support several community and philanthropic endeavors.

The fourth annual Rancho BEERnardo Festival and Tasting hosted by the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club will be 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead, 12655 Sunset Drive in Escondido. The farmstead, located near the Westfield North County mall, is part of the original town of Bernardo.

“This signature event guarantees hours of fun, pleasure and good taste as participants enjoy the finest IPAs, while contributing funds to help community service organizations,” said festival Chairman Gordy Erickson.

Tickets are $40 per person for 15 tastes or $70 for two persons each receiving 15 tastes if purchased in advance at ranchobeernardofestival.com. Tickets sold at the event are $45 per person for 15 tastes. The festival is restricted to those 21 and older.

There is a $10 designated driver ticket available online and at the event. The festival’s website also has a link to a discount for those wanting to get a ride to and from the festival through Lyft. It is for first time Lyft app users.

There will be IPAs from at least 29 breweries. As of press time they were Abnormal, Ale Smith, Alpine, Avery, Bagby Beer Company, Ballast Point, Bear Republic, Coronado, Dogfish Head, Firestone Walker, Green Flash, Hess, IronFire, Lightning, Lost Abbey, Modern Times, Monkey Paw, Mother Earth, New Belgium, Noble Ale Works, Pizza Port, Port Brewing, Rip Current, Russian River, St. Archer, Second Chance, Sierra Nevada, Societe and Stone.

Erickson said the beers are being coordinated by the event’s co-sponsor, Urge American Gastropub. It will be providing more than 50 IPA beers, other beers for more variety and wine from The Barrel Room.

Last year’s event almost sold out, with 475 attendees for the available 500 spaces, he said. For that reason, the Rotarians have made some changes so the event can accommodate up to 700 participants.

In addition to the beers and wines, there will be food available for purchase from Urge, Brothers Provisions and The Barrel Room.

Entertainment has been expanded to feature three bands, which will be Stage 4 Jazz, Lab Rats and The Naked Shorts.

A new feature at this year’s festival will be an opportunity drawing for the chance to be a “beer meister for a day” at Urge’s new brewery opening soon in Oceanside, Erickson said. The winner will be able to make a brew, eat lunch and take home some beer.

Returning will be the Peoples Choice award for the festival’s best beer as voted by attendees and docent-led tours of the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead.

Festival proceeds will go toward the Rotary club’s various projects and endeavors. These include local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops; Mary’s House; Ed Brown Center for Active Adults; Poway Valley Therapeutic Riding Center (PoVa); Team Red, White and Blue; Oasis Haven; Rides & Sm
