Prep Football: Trick play does Titans in against Foothillers

Share

In a slapstick comedy of penalties on key plays, blocked punts, shanked punts, a botched gimme field goal, missed PATs, dropped passes, fumbles and interceptions, Grossmont used a trick play to beat Poway 20-13 on Friday.

With the game tied at 13 and 5:14 to play, the Foothillers took control at their 26.

Quarterback Hunter Gaines pitched to James Mackey, who appeared headed for a sweep right. Instead Mackey pulled up and found Khaleed Davis deep down the right side. Davis hauled in the pass and sped in for a 74-yard score. Brittney Huff booted the PAT.

Then the defense took over for Grossmont (5-0).

Alex Lilliard and Andrew Mink had back-to-back sacks of Poway quarterback Robbie Sullivan.

Then Sullivan — under pressure from Mink, who had a pair of sacks in the game — was intercepted by Riley Havird at the Grossmont 10 with a little under 2:00 remaining.

Grossmont used bruising running back Jake Harr, who finished with 17 carries for 49 yards, to run out the clock.

Poway scored first, going 57 yards on seven plays with Jacob Gaines going the final 10 yards for the score in the second quarter. A 27-yard pass from Sullivan to Zane Abbott set up the score.

Grossmont drew even on its next possession, driving 75 yards on 10 plays with Davis grabbing a 4-yard pass from Gaines for the score. The big play was a 47-yard pass from Gaines to Domonique Guevara.

Poway broke through in the fourth quarter with Sullivan capping a 48-yard drive with a 1-yard run, but the Titans missed the PAT.

Grossmont answered immediately with a 76-yard drive with Gaines scoring on a 20-yard quarterback draw.
