Big plays on offense and a suffocating defense led the Rancho Bernardo High football team to an easy 55-0 victory over Poway Unified School District rival Del Norte Friday night in a non-league game.

Milan Grice and Kaelan Pestano combined for 160 yards rushing and five touchdowns for the Broncos, who delighted the home crowd with a variety of electrifying plays.

“My family was in town, so I wanted to do it for them,” said Pestano, a 5-foot-10 junior. “This was a big game for us, we wanted to do it for coach.”

The Broncos (2-0) got out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Rancho Bernardo led the game 41-0 at halftime and did not let Del Norte (0-2) cross the 50-yard line until the last drive of the game.

Pestano finished with 52 total yards on only five touches, three of them leading to touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. His first quarter 33-yard touchdown run set the tone in the game.

Pestano’s partner in the backfield was not to be outshined. Grice totaled 111 yards on 12 carries, with two of them going for touchdowns. His fourth quarter 20-yard scamper while playing quarterback put the finishing touches on the Broncos dominating performance.

The Broncos defense came to play as well, holding the Nighthawks to 62 rushing yards on 19 carries and intercepting Del Norte’s quarterback, Jake Moore, twice.

Rancho Bernardo’s quarterback, Mark Salazar followed his solid Week 1 performance by completing 5 of 7 passes for 76 yards and three touchdowns.

Broncos’ receivers DeVaughn Vele and Leo Wagner both caught a touchdown from Salazar in the second quarter. Jace Kempner started off the second half by returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.

After outscoring their opponents 87-6 in their first two games, the Broncos’ will likely have bigger challenges in the next three weeks. Upcoming road games against Vista and Carlsbad, with a home game against La Costa Canyon sandwiched between should be a real test.
