Titans’ Chinn captures Vaquero Stampede title
The first cross country race of the season could not have gone any better for Jarett Chinn.
The Poway High senior, who has captured back-to-back 800-meter section titles on the track, opened his year with a first-place finish in the junior/senior division I at the Vaquero Stampede on Saturday. He crossed the taper of the 2.15-mile course at Lindo Lakes in Lakeside in 10-minutes, 13-seconds.
Chinn’s win combined with two other Titans finishing in the top 10 of the race, helped Poway win the team title with 39 points. Michael Downs (10:29) took fifth, Kyle Kesler (10:32) took sixth and Zach Kraft (10:53) took 11th to lead the way for Poway.
Del Norte boys won the junior/senior division II title. Matthew Earney led the Nighthawks with a fourth-place finish, coming in at 10:39. Igor Landa (10:46) took sixth and Jaron Farnham (11:00) finished in ninth place.
The Rancho Bernardo boys and girls will open their season with the Bronco Round-up on Sept. 10 at Kit Carson Park.
