Part of Pomerado Road gives way under fire truck

UPDATED at 8:31 a.m. Tuesday: Crews repaired the road overnight and it was open to traffic Tuesday morning.

Poway public works crews Monday were assessing the extent of damage caused to a section of Pomerado Road that gave way under the weight of a city fire truck waiting at a stoplight.

The front right wheel of the engine truck dropped through the pavement about 3 p.m. today. No one was injured and the truck drove off after being lifted out of danger by a heavy-duty tow truck. Mark Sanchez, the city’s director of public safety, said the truck would be taken out of service and inspected. A reserve truck will take its place for the time being, he said.

Public works employees shined flashlights into the cavern under the roadway and roughly estimated that it extended clear across the No. 2 southbound lane, just north of Twin Peaks Road.

The one lane had been closed to traffic since just after the incident. It was unclear at 4:30 p.m. whether the other lane would be closed and, if so, for how long.
