Parks Fit San Diego 30-mile challenge back at RB park

Share

San Diego Park and Recreation is encouraging people to go outside and get fit through its third annual 30-mile Parks Fit San Diego Challenge.

The challenge is to walk, run, bicycle and/or swim a combined 30 miles by the program’s conclusion on Aug. 13.

Among participating venues is Rancho Bernardo Community Park, where those who register can earn a free Parks Fit San Diego T-shirt if they meet the mileage goal. There is no cost to participate.

Rancho Bernardo-Glassman Recreation Center Director Eric McDonald said registered participants do not need to complete all their miles at the park, but staff there have marked a mile-long path along the sidewalks that wind through the park to aid participants. There are quarter-, half- and three-quarter mile markers along the way.

The starting and ending points are in front of the center at 18448 W. Bernardo Drive.

As of last week, he said more than 70 locals had registered for the program at the RB rec center. Participants can register with any City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department facility.

Participants self-report their miles and can obtain a mileage log when they register in person. They can also register for the program online at SDRecConnect.com using activity code 27510. However, they must come into the center where they are registered to officially log their miles, McDonald said.

While participants can do the challenge on their own, those who would like to walk with others can join RB center staff at 11 a.m. each Friday. Following a brief stretching session inside the center they will head out onto the designated path.

Those who want a closer experience with nature are welcome to hike along the trails in the adjacent San Dieguito River Park, but McDonald said they will need to figure out their distance traveled. McDonald said he has been in contact with the park’s rangers to see if in the future a distance route could be marked along the dirt trails.

The citywide program will conclude with a 5K run/walk and family celebration at NTC Park, 2455 Cushing Road in San Diego. There is a $5 fee to participate in the optional 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13 event. Register at SDRecConnect.com using activity code 24791.
