SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly stole a San Diego Police patrol car at the scene of a drunk driving collision in Chollas Creek Saturday morning was arrested in Rancho Penasquitos about a half-hour later after a high speed pursuit, according to police.

The incident happened at 5:15 a.m. near the intersection of 54th and Redwood Streets, where officers were investigating the crash, according to Officer Frank Cali.

That’s when one of the officers noticed that his patrol car was missing and he put a call out to other officers via radio. The pursuit began on northbound Interstate 5 when the suspect failed to pull over for officers, Cali said.

The pursuit continued to the eastbound state Route 56, where officers deployed spike strips at Black Mountain Road, causing the patrol car’s tires to puncture and deflate. The suspect finally came to a stop in the 1000 block of Rancho Carmel Road in Rancho Penasquitos where he was taken into custody, Cali said.

He was booked into jail on suspicion of auto theft and evading arrest. There were no injuries in the drunk driving crash, Cali said.
