The Poway Valley Garden Club is celebrating spring with its 38th annual Standard Flower Show on April 9.

The flower show will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 and will be held in Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.

The theme this year is “Seed to Table,” representing the philosophy and ambitions of the members of the club.

The competition and judging will be held on Friday. The entries, including the winners, will be on display for the public to view on Saturday. Attendance on Saturday is free and open to the public.

The first division, horticulture classes, includes the competitions for roses; irises; vegetables, fruits, nuts and berries; container-grown succulents; container-grown foliage perennials; container-grown blooming perennials; cut stem perennials; annuals and biennials; trees and shrubs; and California native plants.

Division two is design and includes several categories focusing on “from garden to kitchen and table.” These include table artistry designs and designer’s choice designs of culinary creations in the kitchen.

The third division is special exhibits, focusing on sustaining the garden. Exhibits include native pollinators, composting for the novice, water conservation, club service projects, an endangered plant list, Poway’s Past is Present and special thanks.

The public is welcome to enter their designs based on this theme in the floral competition, or their plants, fruits, vegetables, and cuttings in the horticultural section. Reservations for floral design and special exhibits must be submitted by Friday, March 25 to Adele at akelly@san.rr.com or call 858-673-8728.

The event will also include a plant sale, so visitors can bring home their own flowers to plant.
