Duck races and barbecue help Poway Kiwanis raise $5,000 for Holiday with Heroes event

Flock of Fun, the key fundraiser for the annual Poway Kiwanis Holiday with Heroes event, took place Saturday at the Poway Community Center.

The event included a BBQ dinner, dessert, drinks, duck races, karaoke and a silent auction.

The Kiwanis raised about $5,000 at the event, said Beth Galloway, club secretary.

“We were hoping for at least $4,000,” Galloway said. “Between the sponsors and some direct donations, along with the other activities at the event, we were able to exceed our goal! We still need another $6,000 at least for Holiday with Heroes, but we’re on our way.”

Holiday With Heroes provides underserved elementary school students and families with a memorable holiday experience by providing a way to shop for their families and distributing many needed items.

Last December, about 100 families, including more than 140 children, participated in the drive-through event. Vehicles were packed with gifts, food, blankets and books during the festivities, which included holiday music and Christmas decorations. Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand for photos with the children.
